I came across this quotation and it got me thinking. What is your view about the assertions made?
Have you walked up and down upon the earth lately?
I have; and I have examined Man’s wonderful inventions.
And I tell you that in the arts of life man invents nothing but in the arts of death he outdoes nature herself, and produces by chemistry and machinery all the slaughtered, of plague, pestilence, and famine…when he goes out to slay, he carries a marvel of mechanism that lets loose at the touch of his finger all the hidden molecular energies, and leaves the javelin, the arrow, the blowpipe of his fathers far behind.
In the arts of peace Man is a bungle…his heart is in his weapons…Man measures his strength by his destructiveness.
the Devil, in George Bernard Shaw’s Man and Superman
It is clearly a food for thought. Peace could be the absence of war. Some say “if you want peace, study war.” Some say “we study war because we don’t know what is in the mind of others.” Others feel war can be avoided in totality while some feel war can be there but with civility – advocacy by Henry DUNANT. A quote from above “Man measures his strength by his destructiveness”. Not connected though but worthy a comment. This week, we were spiced by a video for FIRE POWER DEMO by one of the RDF Combined Arms Field Exercise. There is a line there which states in part as follows: …our enemies will not defeat…. One wonders who are these enemies? All in all man authors death almost by default while peace is authored by design.

This is assertion may look to be less realistic but with critical analysis, the evidence is overwhelming that man is the architect of his own calamities as he has the highest propensity of enjoying the pain he inflicts on a fellow man with pleasure. In almost all the generations that have existed so far, the biggest achievement than man is proud of is the invention of weapons of mass destruction. It is for this reason that the assertion merits a second thought.
