For Your Tomorrow, We Gave Our Today

What sacrifices have we made today for our families and country for their better tomorrow?

An evocative epitaph “When you go home, tell them home of us and say, for your tomorrow, we gave our today” is enshrined on the Kohima War Memorial Cemetry in Nagaland, India.

It was built to commemorate the duty, honour and sacrifices of the soldiers of the British empire who laid down their lives to repel Japanese assault in 1944 during World War II.

The soldiers were drawn from various territories that were under the British Empire. They travelled long distances. They left their families behind fully aware that there was a possibility that they would never return home alive.

They were committed to duty and sacrificed their lives for democracy. Remember, the second World War initially began as a conflict between Nazi Germany and the European Democracy, but soon engulfed the World.

We equally have a duty to perform today to positively impact the lives of the future generation. Always remember that we all have an appointment with death. Soon or later we shall be no more. We are all pilgrims.

When we are gone, how do we wish to be remembered?

What duties will we have performed to make this earth a better place for humanity?

What sacrifices will we have made so as not to compromise the capacity of the next generations to meet their needs?

What inscription will be written on our graves when we shall be no more?

Most importantly, how will heaven react when you die?

And I heard a voice from heaven saying unto me, Write, Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth: Yea, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labours; and their works do follow them (Revelation 14:13)
